Dental Implants, The Permanent Solution for Tooth Loss

Dental implants are artificial replacements to compensate for tooth loss. Many people are self conscious if they have lost teeth due to injury or disease. They are sometimes unable to speak or smile comfortably. Also if their bite is irregular it can lead to other complications such as malnutrition. Tooth loss might be due to trauma of the mouth, excessive wear and tear, congenital defects or gum disease. Implant Procedure

The implant procedure is the same whether one or all teeth are missing. Your dentist will make sure you are a candidate for the procedure and use the right type of anesthesia so you will be as comfortable as possible. First the dentist will conduct a through examination of your teeth and gums which might include x-rays and or ct scans to see if you have enough bone and gum tissue to conduct the implant. Procedure Steps

1. Placing the Implant

When the dentist is sure you are healthy and a candidate for this procedure; the bone area where the implant will be placed is exposed by opening the gum tissue. Once healthy bone material has been established, a special drill is used to prepare the bone to receive the implant. A small hole is made where there is no tooth in order to put the titanium screw that will hold the implant in place. The dentist must be very careful not to damage any vital nerves of the jaw and face when drilling this hole. Also, mini implants which are smaller diameter implants might be used. Once the bone is prepared the implant is placed on it and the tissue is then sutured closed.

2. The Healing Process - Osseointegration

The healing process usually lasts three to six months. This is the amount of time it often takes the implant to heal and fuse or become part of the jaw, commonly referred to as osseointegration. Osseointegration is very important for the implant to work. If osseointegration does not occur the implant will not be successful. The sutures however are usually removed, seven to fourteen days after surgery.

3. Attaching the Post

When the gum tissue is ready, a special post is attached to the implant. This is the support for the new porcelain crown. Today's technologies often include zirconium abutments attached to the implant post, to be sure that the new porcelain tooth possesses translucency properties similar to a natural tooth.

4. Placing the Crown

A temporary crown might be used to allow the gums to shape and grow around it. After impressions are taken a crown is made and shaded to match your existing teeth. The crown is then slipped over the post and cemented. The final prosthetic crown appears just like a natural tooth.

5. Caring for the Implant

If you are diligent in the care of an implant it can last up to more than 40 years. You must go to all the follow up appointments and have professional cleanings done. Careful brushing and flossing are also very important to make sure the implant does not fail or get infected.

When we are children that's one of the first things our parents teach us: to brush our teeth – it's actually one of the first “health habits” we are taught as
kids. To brush your teeth is most elementary and effective way to take care of your teeth and to have them and your gums healthy for life. But it needs to be a
habit – it needs to be something you do every day of your life, even if you like or not.

It's fascinating how regularly adults let their tooth brushing to pass away. Or they just forget which one is the right technique to brush them, or how many times
they should do it.

The ADA (American Dental Association) suggest people should brush their teeth two times a day – one of them before going to bed and the other one in the morning.
To brush your teeth at night improves to get rid of bacteria and preserves your mouth clean while you're sleeping. To brush your teeth in the morning improves your

But what would happen if you only brush once a day and you forget to do it again? If that happens – but try to brush your teeth two times a day – brush them at

There are a lot of people that think that fluoride can be dangerous. They believe that fluoride can be harmful to your health and are opposed to using fluoride in any way. Fluoride is usually found on toothpaste and on drinking water. Recently, claims have been made by activists that fluoride causes health risks and they have been opposed to the use of fluoride in drinking water. Many of them are opposed to chemicals based on principle and their research has a weak foundation. Most of what they argue is based on misconceptions and myths; sometimes they resort to using scare tactics to try to prove their point.

Is fluoride a dangerous chemical?

Fluoride is a natural chemical compound that helps to prevent tooth decay. Even though it is a chemical; it is found naturally. Many of the substances that we use every day contain small quantities of fluoride. For instance, fluoride is found naturally in drinking water and food. Usually, when a community fluoridates its water, there’s no “adding” of fluoride at all; often what they do is reduce the level of fluoride in their drinking water in order to achieve the optimal level to improve dental health.

Most dentists will use a fluoride treatment to protect your teeth and most toothpastes contain fluoride to shield your teeth from cavities. Also a lot of our communities in the U.S. increase the levels of fluoride in the drinking water supply in order to improve oral health.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the use of fluoride as an essential component of public health and as a way to prevent the damage caused by tooth decay. What this means is that fluoride can reduce the amount of cavities and as a result reduce the cost of long-term dental care.

How safe is fluoride?

Peer-reviewed scientific research done over many decades has demonstrated that fluoride is an essential component to improve the oral health of Americans during the past 50 years.

What we can see from the reliable scientific research that we have available is that fluoride is safe and it has many benefits. Improving the health of our teeth far outweighs any risks of using fluoride.

Can Fluoride be dangerous for children?

Fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, a type of tooth discoloration. (That is one of the reasons why we try to teach kids NOT to swallow their toothpaste.) Parents of small children should not allow them to use too much fluoride; when young children swallow too much fluoride, it can create this type of dental discoloration. Get your children a specially-formulated children’s toothpaste which contains a lower quantity of fluoride.

Fluorosis occurs very rarely and it usually only causes minor complications. There are a number of possible causes for fluorosis and according to the ADA; fluoride in drinking water has not been proven to be the cause of fluorosis. Once again, most dental health professionals agree that the benefits of fluoride far outweigh these very rare complications.

When is a good time to take my kid to the dentist?

When you’re the father/mother of a young kid, you have to be prepared to take him to a lot of appointments and check-ups, as well as going to the dentist, which is very important and required at such a small age.

Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are a form of x-ray imaging where digital sensors are used instead of traditional x-ray film. Significantly less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional x-rays. Air abrasion is like a mini sandblaster that sprays the decay away. Diagnodent technology uses a simple laser diode to inspect your teeth, comparing reflection wavelength against a known healthy baseline wavelength to uncover decay. How? First, we aim the laser onto one of your healthy enamel tooth surfaces to give us a benchmark reading. Then, we continue on around your mouth, shining the laser into all suspect areas. As the laser pulses into grooves, fissures and cracks, it reflects fluorescent light of a specific wavelength. This light is measured by receptors, converted to an acoustic signal, evaluated electronically to reveal a value between one and 100, then displayed on a screen. Anytime the laser encounters a surface that reads differently than the healthy baseline value, it stimulates emission of fluorescent light of a different wavelength. A reading of 10-20 indicates some enamel softening, pointing to a potential problem area that merits close monitoring. A reading of 21-100 indicates a definite area of decay requiring a filling.

Toys For Tots

Each year Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys and then distributes them as gifts to children in need. The objectives of the annual Toys for Tots drive are to help children in need experience the joy of the holiday season, to nurture the development of children, to unite members of local communities in a common cause and to contribute to the future betterment of communities. In the 63 years since the Toys for Tots program began, the Marines have distributed more than 419 million toys to more than 195 million underprivileged children

Have you ever heard the expression ‘a million dollar smile’?

It’s been applied to everyone from movie stars (like Angelina Jolie) to motivational speakers (like Tony Robbins). And that’s because a great smile can be worth a million dollars as far as making a great impression.

In Psychology Today magazine, Paul Ekman, professor of psychology at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco, and a pioneer of research on facial expressions, revealed the importance of smiling. “We (respond to) a smile from 30 meters away," he says. "A smile lets us know that we're likely to get a positive reception, and it's hard not to reciprocate."

In other words, when you smile at someone, they want to smile back at you. That immediately sets up a positive interaction, even before a word is spoken. What a great way to start off a job interview!

When Good Breath Goes Bad

According to the National Institutes of Health, poor oral hygiene is the most common reason for bad breath. And all the mouthwash, breath mints, and breath fresheners in the world can’t banish bad breath when the source is bacteria rather than the food you eat.
If you’ve been having trouble keeping your mouth feeling fresh and smelling good, this article will help you locate the real source of the problem...and it may not be the onions you ate at lunch.

How do you know if your breath smells bad? If you’re lucky, someone may have the courtesy (and courage) to tell you to your face. But more often than not, other people will simply flinch, turn away, or step back a pace when you’re talking to them.
To avoid the embarrassing situations described above, you can use these two techniques to give yourself a breath checkup and help you determine what’s making your mouth smell so unpleasant to yourself and others.

Breath Test #1 – Front (Anterior) Tongue Test - Lick your wrist. Then wait about five seconds while the saliva dries somewhat. Smell your wrist. If it smells bad, you have probably recently eaten something stinky. Simply brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash, or popping a breath mint should take care of the problem. Chewing on fresh parsley is another effective way to fight temporary bad breath

Breath Test #2 – Back (Posterior) Tongue Test - Take a spoon, turn it upside down, and use it to gently scrape the very back portion of your tongue. (It’s common that this test can cause an automatic ‘gag’ reaction, so be prepared.) A thick whitish material will be on the spoon. Give it a sniff. If the smell is sharp and unpleasant, you most likely have halitosis, the kind of ‘bad breath’ that is caused by poor oral hygiene and that won’t respond to simple brushing and mouth wash.
If you failed Breath Test #2, you’re not alone. A research study conducted by the University of Buffalo in New York concluded that one in four adults has halitosis, and some estimates suggest that as many as 90 million Americans have bad breath related to oral hygiene.

When the white substance on the back of your tongue smells bad, the likely culprit is a bacteria associated with gum disease is. The bacteria’s name is actinomyces, and it feeds on protein particles on the teeth and gums, producing foul-smelling sulfur gases in the process. Actinomyces is also the bacteria responsible for giving soil its ‘dirt’ smell and envelopes your mouth a sharp, pungent aroma.

Bacteria growth occurs when you fail to pay attention to your oral hygiene. In fact, flossing daily and brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day can greatly reduce bad breath
as well as make it more difficult for bacteria to grow. BUT...

The same bacteria that cause gum disease, tooth decay, and abscessed teeth are also responsible for halitosis. Regular check-ups and professional cleanings are the only way to really ensure that your mouth is healthy and your breath is sweet-smelling.

What Coffee and Wine Do To Teeth

It’s been said that ‘you are what you eat’, but when it comes to oral hygiene, you are what you drink. And if you drink a lot of coffee and wine, you may be putting your smile at risk.

When most people worry about the ‘damage’ done to teeth by their favorite beverages – coffee and wine – they generally think in terms of the unsightly stains left behind. Now, staining, in and of itself, does not necessarily pose a true risk to the health of your teeth or your gums. But if you have stained teeth, it probably means that you’ve been ‘playing hooky’ when it comes to seeing your cosmetic dentist in Huntington Beach and you may have unhealthy plaque on your teeth.

When plaque forms and hardens, it causes a calculus build-up known as tartar. Tartar is more easily discolored by coffee and wine than healthy enamel and that turns your smile from white to yellow or brown. But there’s more to the problem than just discoloration. Plaque and tartar irritate the gums, leading to gingivitis and gum disease.

That’s just the beginning...

Coffee is an acidic drink. That acidity is just as harmful to the health of your teeth as it is to the lining of your stomach, eating away the surface bit by bit. According to one study at Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany, adult teeth soaked in white wine for a day lost calcium as well as phosphorous up to a depth of 60mm in the enamel surface of the teeth. (Red wine is not known to promote rapid tooth erosion)

Are there any safeguards to help prevent tooth enamel loss without having to give up your favorite vintage?

Yes! One tip is to be sure you eat when you drink.

Eating while drinking promotes the production of saliva, this in turn fights against the erosion of tooth enamel. Cheese is an ideal food to pair with white wine, for flavor and dental health. Cheese is a rich in calcium, which can counteract the acidity level of white wines.

And while it may seem counter-intuitive, you should refrain from brushing your teeth immediately after drinking white wine. Brushing too soon after consuming a very acidic beverage may damage the tooth’s structure, says Mark Wolff, a professor and chairman of the department of comprehensive care at NYU’s College of Dentistry. “Saliva has the capability of re-mineralizing the tooth structure and neutralizing damage, so give it 40 minutes to an hour before you brush your teeth,” he says.

The good news is that despite the negative effects they may have, it’s not really necessary to cut down on white wine or coffee if you enjoy them. But it is necessary to pay more attention to your dental hygiene.

Coupled with professional cleanings, timely brushing and regular flossing will allow you to eat, drink, and be merry without worrying about tooth or gum disease.

In their quest for a brighter, white smile, many people have turned to the do-it-yourself bleaching products that are widely available. But is that a wise decision, or is there a high price to be paid for choosing a low-cost solution?

For some lucky folks, all it takes to get a super-white smile is twice-daily brushing with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, once-a-day flossing, and regular cleanings at your Huntington Beach dentist’s office. For most of us, however, it’s necessary to go ‘above and beyond’ this basic regimen. That’s where bleaching comes in...sometimes.

And that’s where your dentist comes in...always. Your Huntington Beach dentist can evaluate your mouth to determine whether you are a good candidate for the bleaching process and select the best process for you and your mouth.

Have you seen commercials on television and in magazines for do-it-yourself bleaching products that promise to turn even the most stubbornly discolored teeth into pearly white masterpieces? Beware! So if you want to try a bleaching toothpaste, talk to your dentist first and be sure to check the label to see if the product has earned the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance.

Over-the Counter Bleaching Kit

While popular due to a modest price ($10-$15 per kit), this do-it-yourself approach to teeth whitening has not been approved by the ADA. And with good reason!
Using a home bleaching kit for more than three weeks can seriously damage your teeth. The acidic gel in OTC bleaching kits may erode your enamel and dental work. You can become nauseated if you swallow too much of it. The gel (containing a solution of 10-16% peroxide) can make your teeth sensitive to temperature for several weeks afterward.

Some kits come with a narrow peroxide tape that adheres to your teeth. Others come with mouth trays that you wear over your upper and lower teeth for a few hours a day. Advertisers claim that by putting them into hot water you can shape them to your teeth for a custom fit.
Your dentist can provide a safer, more effective version of what's in the drugstore.

Prescription Bleaching Kits

If white is your goal, your dentist in Huntington Beach can help you reach it with a comfortable, custom-made-just-for-you mouth tray and a more viscous bleaching gel that you're less likely to swallow.
